Home Studio Yoga is a community-centered yoga studio in San Anselmo, CA, where connection is just as important as the practice itself.
Community has started to men a lot of different things lately. Online groups, social media, and the people we interact with in small ways, but don’t actually know in real life. And even with all of that, it can still feel like something is missing. There aren’t always many spaces where you can simply show up, be around other people, and slowly get to know them, without it needing to be anything formal.
At our yoga studio in San Anselmo, that’s something we’ve always cared about. Not just offering classes, but creating a space where people can spend a little time before and after, sit with a cup of tea, talk, or just exist in the same room without feeling like they have to rush in and out.

It usually starts in small ways. You begin to recognize faces, maybe say hello, maybe notice when someone hasn’t been around for a while and ask about it the next time you see them. And over time, it naturally becomes something more than that. People go for walks together after class, grab coffee, celebrate birthdays, check in on each other. We’ve seen people support each other through really difficult things too, offering rides to class, helping with appointments, staying connected even when someone moves away and keeping that relationship going from a distance.
This is what a real yoga community looks like.

That kind of connection doesn’t happen all at once. It builds slowly, just from being in the same space, over and over again, and for a lot of people, that ends up being just as meaningful as the practice itself.

It’s not performative, and it’s not about getting things right. We’re not focused on perfect postures or keeping up with anyone else in the room, and we’re not teaching whatever trend happens to be popular. The practice is slower, more aware, and more internal. You’re paying attention to your breath, to how your body feels as you move, and over time that awareness doesn’t just stay on your mat, it naturally extends outward. You start to notice the people around you too, in a quieter, more genuine way.
We also create space for connection beyond class, through workshops, sound healings, live music, breathwork, and smaller gatherings. Sometimes it’s something planned, like a book club or a kirtan, and sometimes it’s just tea after class that turns into a longer conversation than anyone expected. None of it is forced, it’s just there if people want it.

That was always the intention behind Home Studio Yoga. I’ve lived in different places over the years, and the spaces that stayed with me were the ones where people gathered, not just to practice, but to connect in a real way. That sense of community was what made those places feel meaningful, and it’s something I wanted to create here as well.
Because when people know each other, it changes things. It changes how we move through our days, how we treat each other, how we show up in our wider community. It creates a kind of care that extends beyond the studio.

If you’re looking for a yoga community in San Anselmo, it’s not always about finding the most advanced class or the most popular studio, it’s more about finding a place where you feel comfortable coming back, where over time, it starts to feel familiar.
That’s usually what makes the difference.
With love,
Martine
